Hero Realms

Hero Realms by White Wizard Games gives you a deckbuilding adventure. Where two (or more) heroes face off against each other while recruiting more minions and gaining more strength. The introduction of different starter decks is a great way to find your own style and adding an extra dimension to the adventure. Because games take about 30 minutes, this is a fun go-to game for instant fun!
Lovely box which contains the entire game for up to 4 players

How does it play?

Hero Realms is a deckbuilding cardgame. This means that you start with a set of base cards which you can use to buy additional cards and thus increase your deck with more valuable cards, while possibly disposing of your weaker cards. Each card makes you gain either gold, does damage or heals you. Only 5 random cards (and a default) are available for purchase every time, so a bit of luck and the necessary resources are required. Buying a card puts that card in your discard pile, preparing it to be drawn in future rounds.
You can buy this card for your deck for 3 gold. It allows you to do 5 damage, and heal 6 when synergising with another yellow card!
In total, there are 4 colors of cards that can be bought (and neutral black). Every color has its main advantages. Where blue cards makes you bend the rules a little and green cards give you very synergetic cards, yellow cards will mostly heal you, while red will let you deal heavy damage. Having cards of all colors benefits you with there singular strength, but will limit their synergy. So buying the right cards is key!

A single turn

Each in turn you'll play your entire hand. That'll earn you gold which you'll use to buy new cards and make you deal damage to your opponent. This'll happen turn after turn.
What to buy from the market..

Winning the game

Defeat your opponent(s) by lowering their health to 0. This, while trying to keep your health as high as possible!

What's in the box

The starter box contains 4 starter decks and another 100 cards to help you play the game. Rules are clearly written in the rulebook and the box itself allows you to keep everything tidy. I myself splurged on the kickstarter and thus have the expansion packs, which include special (and very fun) starter decks. Like a warrior, rogue or wizard!

Compared to...

Dominion is a well known deckbuilding game, but where you can build a strategy beforehand in Dominion, Hero Realms will surprise you with every draw. So don't expect to always win with the same color. Players of Star Realms will love this as well. The Roleplay theme fits this gamestyle perfectly!

Pick this up if...

You like card games with a random effect. Be quick on your feet and try to make the right choices. The game takes about 20 minutes so no real commitment is required.  Because the game's easy to learn, you'll be certain to play it often.

Don't bother if ...

There is a huge random factor in the game. If this scares away your tactical mind then keep playing Dominion. Don't expect big tactics to be found, but do know you'll have to learn how to combine the different cards!
