Dixit

Dixit is a game for 3 to 12 players that lets your imagination be the difference. With the slogan of "a picture says more than a thousands words", you try to let some people guess which is your picture from all the other pictures, using a single hint. While in other turns, you'll add a picture to the pool to try and confuse others in voting for you. Imagination and fun are key while playing this game, playable by everyone!
Step into a game about imagination!

How does it play?

Dixit is a descriptive game where you have a hand of six beautifully designed cards. Every turn a player, called the storyteller, places a card facedown and gives a hint concerning the contents of this card to the other players. This hinting can be a word, a quote, a sound, actually anything. The other players get to add one of their pictures facedown to the pile and these are shuffled together. Next, they have to guess which card was the original one the storyteller played. Once every player has guessed, the storyteller reveals the correct card and points are tallied.

A single turn

Telling the story

The storyteller choses a card from his/her hand and places that card face down in the middle of the table. Then, a gesture, sound, sentence or emotion is made by the storyteller hinting everybody to that card. With this, every other player can pitch in a card from their hand. Once everybody has added a card, these cards are shuffled and placed in the center of the table around the scoring board, showing a reference number for each card.
The hint is.. "Blub"

Voting

With these cards in play, everyone gets to vote, which card they think is most likely to be the one of the storyteller. This is done by secretly voting on a cardboard and then revealing your choices all at once.

Tally

Based on everyones choice, the points are tallied per player, and all cards on the table are moved to a discard pile. Then, a new card is drawn by all players and a new round begins, with the storyteller becoming the player to the left of the current storyteller.
If "Green" would've been the storyteller, everybody except "Yellow" would gain points.

Winning the game

The first player to reach 30 points wins the game. These points are scored by either having no one guess the correct card, which earns all players, except the storyteller 2 points. Else, you get 1 point if you guessed the picture correctly. The storyteller gets 3 points if some guessed the correct picture, and other players get an extra point if someone voted for their picture.

What's in the box

Actually, there are 2 different base boxes for Dixit. The first one contains enough for up to six players to play together, while "Odyssey" offers material for up to 12 players. That's the version I actually own. Though the game has no other significant changes.
You get enough token-bunnies and scoreboards to play the game with 12 players  and 84 image-cards to start your Dixit adventure.
The box, as well as the accessories are sturdy and offer enough place for expansions.

Expansions

Expansions are a big deal in Dixit. Where other games extend your game with new rules and other options, all expansions for Dixit simply present you with new cards! Thanks to that, there are quite a lot of them, each with their own themes.

Compared to...

Compared to other card games, Dixit stands out making you tell the story yourself. Comparing it to other party games, like Card against Humanity or Joking Hazard, Dixit is much more child-friendly, and has a shorter timeframe as games take about 30 minutes.

Pick this up if...

you have a big imagination and like abstract games. Children above 7 years enjoy this game about as much as most adults which makes this a fun family game as well. Be prepared to pick up extra expansions as 80 cards is little if the game hits your table occasionally. With a short gametime this game can be played at the beginning or ending of a gaming night, or simply a game to fill some time.

Don't bother if ...

you like logic above imagination. If games should be more pensive than imaginative. The game is also better played with friends than strangers, where you need to figure out how they think.
